Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) is Eli Lilly’s once-weekly injection licensed by the MHRA for weight management in adults and recommended by NICE for NHS use. It is the first medicine to activate both the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, and in the SURMOUNT programme it produced the largest average weight loss ever recorded for a licensed weight-management medicine. One small injection a week, at any time of day, with or without food.
How it works
Mounjaro® mimics two hormones your gut releases after eating — GIP and GLP-1. Together they tell your brain you are full, slow the emptying of your stomach and quieten the constant “food noise” that makes eating less so difficult.
Because tirzepatide is engineered to last in the body for around a week, a single weekly injection maintains a steady effect on appetite. GIP activation also improves how your body responds to insulin and handles fat, which is one reason Mounjaro is licensed for type 2 diabetes as well as weight management. Used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and under the supervision of our clinicians, it helps you eat less without constant willpower battles. Injections use a very fine needle into the abdomen, thigh or upper arm; around 97% of patients report no pain.

SURMOUNT-1 was a 72-week phase 3 study of 2,539 adults with obesity or overweight (without diabetes), comparing three doses of tirzepatide with placebo alongside diet and physical activity. These are averages — individual results vary and no treatment can guarantee a specific outcome.

Mounjaro starts at 2.5mg and increases by 2.5mg every four weeks, giving your body time to adjust and keeping side effects manageable. Your prescriber agrees the maintenance dose that suits you — 5mg, 10mg and 15mg are all licensed maintenance doses, and many patients settle below the maximum.

Mounjaro is a prescription weight-management medicine, used alongside diet and exercise — not a quick fix. Under its UK licence it is intended for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes or obstructive sleep apnoea.

Safety at a glance
Tirzepatide has been studied in more than 10,000 trial participants and is monitored continuously by the MHRA. Most side effects are gastrointestinal, mild to moderate, and ease as your body adjusts to each dose. For a full list of side effects, please see the patient information leaflet.
Eat smaller, lower-fat meals and stay well hydrated to ease nausea, which usually settles within a few weeks of each dose change. Mounjaro must not be used in pregnancy and should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you take the contraceptive pill, use a barrier method for four weeks after starting and after each dose increase. Seek urgent medical help for severe or persistent abdominal pain, ongoing vomiting or signs of dehydration. Your medical history and current medicines are always reviewed by a prescriber before treatment begins.
Report a side effect. You can report any suspected side effect from any medicine directly to the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, which helps the regulator monitor medicines and keep them safe for everyone.

What is Mounjaro®?
Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injection made by Eli Lilly. It is licensed by the MHRA for weight management in adults living with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related condition, and for type 2 diabetes. It is supplied as a KwikPen containing four weekly doses.
How much weight could I expect to lose?
In the SURMOUNT-1 clinical trial, people taking Mounjaro 15 mg lost an average of 22.5% of their body weight over 72 weeks while on treatment.
For example, a person weighing 100 kg could lose approximately 22.5 kg, bringing their weight to around 77.5 kg.

How does Mounjaro work?
Tirzepatide activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1. Together they reduce appetite, slow stomach emptying and improve how your body handles blood sugar, so you feel full sooner and eat less. Its effect lasts around a week, which is why one injection is enough.
How long will it take to see results?
Appetite changes usually appear within the first few weeks on the starting dose. Most people notice measurable weight loss within 2–3 months, with results continuing to build as the dose increases. Full effects were measured at 72 weeks in the trials.
Does Mounjaro affect the contraceptive pill?
It can. Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which may reduce absorption of oral contraceptives. The UK SmPC advises using a barrier method or switching to a non-oral method for four weeks after starting Mounjaro and for four weeks after each dose increase. Mounjaro must not be used in pregnancy.
How do I inject Mounjaro?
Once a week, on the same day each week, into the skin of the abdomen (at least 5cm from the navel), thigh or upper arm using the KwikPen with a new fine needle each time. Rotate injection sites. It can be taken at any time of day, with or without food. We provide written and video guidance with your first order.
How do I store the Mounjaro KwikPen?
Keep the pen in the fridge at 2°C to 8°C in its original packaging. If needed, it can be kept unrefrigerated for up to 30 days below 30°C. Do not freeze. Remove the needle after each use and keep out of reach of children.
What happens if I miss a dose?
If it is within 4 days (96 hours) of the missed dose, inject as soon as you remember and continue your usual weekly day. If more than 4 days have passed, skip it and take your next dose on the usual day. Never take two doses within 3 days of each other. Contact us if you miss two or more doses in a row.
Is Mounjaro safe?
Tirzepatide has been studied in more than 10,000 trial participants and is approved by the MHRA and recommended by NICE. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal and usually ease with time. Rare but serious effects such as pancreatitis are well characterised, which is why every patient is assessed by a prescriber and can contact us at any point during treatment.
Will I regain weight if I stop?
Some weight regain is common after stopping GLP-1 medicines without sustained lifestyle changes. Mounjaro is licensed for long-term use, with regular reviews to check it is still helping. We support you through maintenance and, if you choose to stop, help plan a gradual step-down.
Can I switch to Mounjaro from another weight-loss treatment?
Yes, with prescriber guidance. Your clinician will review your current treatment, dose and tolerance and advise the appropriate Mounjaro starting dose. Never switch or combine treatments without clinical advice.
