Wegovy® is a once-weekly semaglutide injection licensed by the MHRA for weight management in adults, and recommended by NICE for NHS use. It has been evaluated in more than 20 clinical trials across tens of thousands of participants, including the landmark SELECT study which showed it protects the heart as well as reducing weight. One small injection a week, at any time of day, with or without food.
How it works
Wegovy® mimics GLP-1, a hormone your gut releases after eating. It tells your brain you are full, slows the emptying of your stomach and quietens the constant “food noise” that makes eating less so difficult.
Because semaglutide is engineered to last in the body for around a week, a single weekly injection maintains a steady effect on appetite. Used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and under the supervision of our clinicians, it helps you eat less without constant willpower battles. Injections use a very fine needle into the abdomen, thigh or upper arm and most patients describe them as virtually painless.

What the STEP trials showed.
STEP 1 (1,961 adults, 68 weeks) established Wegovy 2.4mg; STEP UP (1,407 adults, 72 weeks) tested the new 7.2mg maximum dose. Both compared semaglutide with placebo alongside diet and physical activity. These are averages — individual results vary and no treatment can guarantee a specific outcome.

Beyond the scales

The SELECT trial followed 17,604 adults with overweight or obesity and established cardiovascular disease for an average of 3.3 years. Those on Wegovy 2.4mg had 20% fewer major cardiovascular events — heart attacks, strokes and cardiovascular deaths — than those on placebo, with the benefit appearing early and independent of how much weight was lost.
On the strength of this evidence the MHRA extended Wegovy’s UK licence to include reducing cardiovascular risk. Semaglutide has also been shown to improve blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, liver fat and symptoms of heart failure and knee osteoarthritis in dedicated trials.

Is Wegovy® right for you?
Wegovy is a prescription weight-management medicine, used alongside diet and exercise — not a quick fix. Under its UK licence it is intended for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes or obstructive sleep apnoea. It is also licensed to reduce cardiovascular risk in adults with a BMI of 27 or above and established heart disease.

Eat smaller, lower-fat meals and stay well hydrated to ease nausea, which usually settles within a few weeks of each dose change. Wegovy must not be used in pregnancy and should be stopped at least two months before trying to conceive. Seek urgent medical help for severe or persistent abdominal pain, ongoing vomiting or signs of dehydration. Your medical history and current medicines are always reviewed by a prescriber before treatment begins.

What is Wegovy®?
Wegovy is the brand name for semaglutide 2.4mg (and now 7.2mg), a once-weekly GLP-1 injection made by Novo Nordisk. It is licensed by the MHRA for weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with a weight-related condition, and for reducing cardiovascular risk in adults with established heart disease.
How much weight could I expect to lose?
In the STEP UP clinical trial, people taking the 7.2 mg dose lost an average of 20.7% of their body weight over 72 weeks while on treatment.

Does Wegovy affect the contraceptive pill?
No. Studies show semaglutide does not meaningfully change the levels of the combined oral contraceptive, so no additional contraception is required. Wegovy must not be used in pregnancy, so effective contraception remains important throughout treatment.
How does Wegovy protect the heart?
In the SELECT trial, Wegovy reduced major cardiovascular events by 20% in adults with overweight or obesity and existing heart disease. The MHRA has approved this as a licensed indication in the UK. Your prescriber can discuss whether this applies to you.

How do I inject Wegovy?
Once a week, on the same day each week, into the skin of the abdomen, thigh or upper arm using the pre-filled pen with a very fine needle. It can be taken at any time of day, with or without food. We provide written and video guidance with your first order.
What is the 7.2mg dose?
The MHRA authorised a 7.2mg maximum weekly dose in January 2026 and a single-dose 7.2mg pen in April 2026. It is an option for adults who tolerate 2.4mg well and need further weight loss, reached through additional four-weekly dose steps under prescriber supervision.
What happens if I miss a dose?
If your next dose is more than 48 hours away, inject the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is less than 48 hours away, skip it and continue on your usual day. Never take two doses within 48 hours. Contact us if you miss two or more doses in a row.
Will I regain weight if I stop?
Some weight regain is common after stopping GLP-1 medicines without sustained lifestyle changes. Wegovy is licensed for long-term use, with regular reviews to check it is still helping. We support you through maintenance and, if you choose to stop, help plan a gradual step-down.
Can I switch to Wegovy from another weight-loss treatment?
Yes, with prescriber guidance. Your clinician will review your current treatment, dose and tolerance and advise the appropriate Wegovy starting dose. Never switch or combine treatments without clinical advice.
